*** (03:55:36):Welcome to the Supernova Chat Room.
gerrywastaken says to  (04:01:27):
Hi all
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:01:55):
Hi Gerry
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:02:04):
<< Howard Greenstein from Supernova
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:02:34):
Welcome guests and named chatters
yumyumsesame says to  (04:02:58):
Hello :)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:06:59):
Is anyone in the chat already on wave besides me and Chris?
gerrywastaken says to  (04:07:55):
I had a dev account but lost my password and the reset password system hadn’t been implimented
ACDouglas says to  (04:08:37):
Hi all
gerrywastaken says to  (04:08:48):
How does Google intend to make money off their work on Wave considering they are opensourcing the code and protocol?
ACDouglas says to  (04:09:36):
that’s a good question–worth asking Lars, Steph and Jens on the call
gerrywastaken says to  (04:10:00):
don’t have a mic
jlogo says to  (04:10:26):
Howard is monitoring the chat and will ask them for you
gerrywastaken says to  (04:10:34):
cool :)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:10:47):
yes, I didn’t want to interrupt yet
gerrywastaken says to  (04:10:59):
of course :)
gerrywastaken says to  (04:11:37):
I’m in Australia :)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:11:41):
I have feedback too :-)
gerrywastaken says to  (04:12:51):
^meaning the phone call isn’t really an option either
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:13:25):
Gerry thanks, will get your questions on
gerrywastaken says to  (04:13:47):
Is Lars aware that ICQ used to have the see as you type functionality years back?
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:16:09):
any other questions for the team?
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:16:27):
and thanks Jens for joining the chat!
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:16:42):
Good to be here ;-)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:16:50):
I would have run the chat on a wave but…
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:17:10):
not everyone is on, and it is still tough for me to find a “wave URL” to tell someone how to find a public wave.
jlogo says to  (04:17:28):
I was just thinking that as well, howard ;-)
ACDouglas says to  (04:18:50):
We are working on making public waves easier to use
ACDouglas says to  (04:19:34):
And looking forward to getting more users!
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:20:40):
Thanks AC, I’ve also heard more requests for Discovery – easier to find contacts, and easier to find out who is online at any given time and how to invite them into a wave at that moment, similar to gchat
ACDouglas says to  (04:21:50):
Yes, we are getting a lot of feature feedback like that–this chat is a good place to field those and talk about more of the strategic questions on the call
gerrywastaken says to  (04:22:38):
Btw, I don’t think it really needs to be said, but fantastic work on Wave! I and many others I’ve spoken to are really impressed with what we’ve seen.
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:22:55):
Thanks from the whole Wave team!
gerrywastaken says to  (04:23:16):
“Gerry” was taken
Jinnan says to  (04:23:17):
Hi everyone, and Wave team in Sydney :)
gerrywastaken says to  (04:23:34):
meaning “Gerry” wasn’t available :)
Jinnan says to  (04:24:35):
Q: Does Google think that Wave could be a Twitter killer?
gerrywastaken says to  (04:24:47):
LOL, Hi J
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:24:50):
There was a question from a caller in a car, asked me to ask on his behalf – will you incorporate Voice to text (from Google Voice) into Wave (or vice versa – text to speech)
Jinnan says to  (04:25:04):
Hi gerrywastaken :) \
barbarafrench says to  (04:25:38):
can you talk a little about the “hype” you’ve been seeing in the market, and how you try to manage that (or not). also, re: “misinformation” you’ve been seeing in the market.
gerrywastaken says to  (04:26:19):
Good answer
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:26:50):
Wow. I’m getting a better vision of the platform play
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:27:11):
<<howardgr speaking for myself on that, not on Supernova’s behalf
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:27:48):
Thank you Barbara. We’ll try to get your question in, or the Wave folks can answer here
ACDouglas says to  (04:29:32):
Hi Barbara, its been remarkable to see the response from users and mainly we want to communicate very openly about where the product is, and also be responsive to feedback
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:30:00):
AC – maybe you want to identify your self here in the chat
ACDouglas says to  (04:30:53):
Hi everyone,  I’m Anna-Christina, product marketing for Google Wave
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:31:01):
thanks
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:31:27):
Funny, Teddy was taken as well!  Anyway, curious about if you’re seeing any differences in behavior in the use of Wave among different cultures, specifically gender?
yumyumsesame says to  (04:31:29):
Hi Anna-Christina
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:31:50):
Great question Teddy.
Supernova says (04:32:26):
great question, teddy (this is chris, btw).  will bring it in next.
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:33:57):
Hey Chris!
gerrywastaken says to  (04:34:14):
Other than crashes and downtimes, what are the main criticisms you are getting?
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:34:23):
I’d love to see how a class of 6th graders would use it. I have such a class in mind too :-)
jlogo says to  (04:35:11):
Can I join that class? ;-)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:35:55):
My kids have a period on Technology every other day and when they finish their work the’re allowed to “experiment” with certain sites and tools.
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:36:05):
They keep finding features the teacher didn’t know.
ACDouglas says to  (04:36:27):
Wanted to also clarify on Teddy’s question that we dont actually track users by gender, or any personally identifiable information
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:37:02):
Thanks Anna Christina – think to Teddy’s point it would be very interesting to learn more about that difference.
jlogo says to  (04:38:03):
ACD, do you know if people are using it right now more for social or business collaboration?
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:38:28):
Seems like we’re (finally) starting to see some traction around Design for Women or Gender-Based Design that might be interesting to consider here.
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:38:39):
but I take your point that you’re not tracking at the moment
Supernova says (04:38:47):
+1 on your comment, teddy.  (but i’m biased :-) )
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:39:13):
:-) )
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:39:27):
Teddy, do you know stats on whether women or men are more collaborative?
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:39:39):
by nature or culture or however measured?
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:39:51):
LOL
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:40:09):
Or, what are you hoping to learn?
ACDouglas says to  (04:40:22):
Thats an interesting point, I dont think that we would ever track by gender, but to Steph’s point, we would use more focused, in-person studies for this, potentially
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:40:37):
that’s a large question I’m not touching in this medium!  Speaking of learning to use the right medium at the right time!
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:40:54):
Yes, there’s not really enough context in a chat window.
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:40:56):
but more than happy to take that off line and share with you what we learned
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:40:58):
Medium
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:41:02):
vs message
yumyumsesame says to  (04:41:47):
I use google docs to collaborate on university assignments. Despite being “Gen-Y” my classmates were surprisingly apprehensive about adapting to a new technology. How will you make Wave user friendly to the less ‘tech savvy’ user?
ACDouglas says to  (04:42:15):
Great question!
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:42:16):
We’re taking callers at 347 945 6578 and press 1 to get to me to screen your call
yumyumsesame says to  (04:42:31):
Oh, my name is Amanda btw.
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:42:36):
Wave Gardening
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:42:55):
or Wave Surgery?
Supernova says (04:43:01):
meta-waves! :-)
ACDouglas says to  (04:43:07):
We’re using this preview time to both gather product feedback and compelling use-cases
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:43:09):
Two different metaphors – very different ideas
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:43:15):
for the same feature
ACDouglas says to  (04:44:03):
We hope that illustrating use cases is one way to help make Wave compelling for even apprehensive users
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:44:04):
Ah- Be able to grab/prune a wave and take part of conversation into a new wave
jlogo says to  (04:44:52):
How about curating waves based on user-defined criteria?
rani.gill says to  (04:45:03):
partof teh apprehension is different boundaries, i.e. editing others words when you don’ t have pre-existing relationships
gerrywastaken says to  (04:45:13):
Q: With the ability for a wave to be published to a blog isn’t there a lot of risk that confidential information will be often accidently sent out to the world by a careless user who is part of the wave?
rani.gill says to  (04:45:59):
great comment!
yumyumsesame says to  (04:47:42):
Thank you. :)
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:49:39):
No pressure to answer now, btw
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:49:43):
we know you’re not lawyers
gerrywastaken says to  (04:50:41):
My question was asked but sorta missed because the lawyers question was quite different to mine.
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:50:42):
GREAT feature
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:50:51):
ok Gerry
gerrywastaken says to  (04:50:57):
just letting you know
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:51:07):
Anna Christna or Jens, either can answer here if you want to
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:51:59):
Well, we try to make it as clear as possible on a wave that someone has published it, so all participants can see it when they add to the wave.
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:52:21):
<<Howard is personally Hoping for a way to favorite or rank waves to remember to go back to them
ACDouglas says to  (04:52:40):
Tags and folders are pretty good for that even now
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:52:51):
The things that have been entered prior to publishing is available to the person that publishes, so that aspect really is exactly like someone forwarding or publishing a email thread they are on
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:52:51):
Ok, will look at that
rani.gill says to  (04:53:20):
more invites?
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:53:56):
They mentioned earlier that they are sending them out daily
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:54:09):
but are getting more requests than the can handle right now
gerrywastaken says to  (04:54:18):
Very true Jens, wave just makes it easier. :)
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:56:04):
Wave does make it easier, but hopefully it also makes it clearer what’s happening so everybody knows. In email I think you are lees likely to notice someone added as an CC in a long list of CCs, and someone forwarding would not be visible at all.
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:56:36):
(Adding a CC and forward being the equivalent functionality in email)
Eddie L says to  (04:57:36):
if the idea is “email if it was invented today”, How is Spam going to be dealt with?
gerrywastaken says to  (04:57:54):
Thanks Jens
Jinnan says to  (04:58:05):
And viral “waves”?
yumyumsesame says to  (04:58:21):
great question!!
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:58:55):
Wow, great questions
jlogo says to  (04:58:59):
Jeannie from Supernova: If you want to receive follow up info from this call, you need to opt-in for updates here: http://www.supernovahub.com/signup/
jlogo says to  (04:59:17):
Thanks Wave team!
barbarafrench says to  (04:59:24):
thanks!
gerrywastaken says to  (04:59:25):
Yeah Thanks!
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:59:26):
In general, looking at the equivalent for the various new aspects of Wave often helps with these issues. Someone editing others content seems scary at first, but in email, anybody can mess with the quoted parts.
ACDouglas says to  (04:59:27):
Thanks for calling in, everyone!
Teddy Zmrhal says to  (04:59:29):
Thanks all!
Supernova (Cohost) says to  (04:59:42):
Thank you for great questions and discussions!
Jens Rasmussen says to  (04:59:46):
In Wave the same is true (by default), but we mark up changes, and there’s the playback history for reference.
Eddie L says to  (05:00:52):
Spam meaning unsolicited waves appearing in the inbox
ACDouglas says to  (05:01:33):
We are working on a trust model so you will get messages from those you have confirmed as contacts

Is it me, or is there a lot of static in the audio creating a difficult and unpleasant listening experience?

  3. Not sure what you’re hearing, Anonymous — sounds pretty clear on this end. Are there particular spots in the audio you’re having the issue?
